What are stećci?

Stećci are large medieval stone tombstones found across Bosnia and Herzegovina and surrounding regions.
They are one of the most unique cultural symbols of the country.

Key features of stećci

  • Made of large stone blocks
  • Often decorated with:
    • Crosses

5. Austro-Hungarian Period (1878–1918)

  • Modernization (railways, schools, industry)
  • Western-style architecture in cities
  • 1914 Sarajevo assassination → trigger of World War I

6. World War II Period (1941–1945)

This is one of the most significant and dramatic periods in Bosnia’s history.

Why Bosnia was central:

  • The region became a major stronghold of battles and resistance against the occupation
  • It was occupied by Axis powers (Nazi Germany, Italy, and collaborators)
  • Very difficult mountainous terrain helped guerrilla warfare

The Yugoslav Partisans (Resistance Movement)

Led by Josip Broz Tito

They became:

  • One of the largest and strongest resistance movements in occupied Europe
  • Known for guerrilla warfare in mountains and forests
  • Supported later by the Allies (UK, USA, USSR)

Major battles and offensives in Bosnia

Bosnia was the center of several huge Axis offensives:

  • The Igman March (1942) – The march was conducted in extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to roughly (-30 till -40 C)
  • Battle of Neretva (1943) – major rescue of wounded Partisans
  • Battle of Sutjeska (1943) – one of the hardest battles, nearly encircled. Large German “anti-Partisan” operations involving tens of thousands of troops. 22000 against 127.000

These battles are considered:

  • Some of the largest anti-guerrilla operations in Europe
  • A symbol of extreme resistance under pressure

Why this resistance was so famous:

  • Partisans survived despite being surrounded and outnumbered
  • Used mountains like Sutjeska, Zelengora, and Bosnia’s terrain
  • Created a reputation as one of the strongest resistance forces in WWII Europe

7. Yugoslav Period (1945–1992)

  • Socialist Yugoslavia under Tito
  • Industrial growth and rebuilding after WWII
  • Strong “Brotherhood and Unity” ideology

8. Bosnian War (1992–1995)

  • Breakup of Yugoslavia
  • Independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Siege of Sarajevo and major humanitarian crisis

9. Modern Period (1995–today)

  • Peace established by Dayton Agreement
  • Reconstruction and tourism growth
  • Multi-ethnic political system

Key idea to remember

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a crossroads of civilizations, shaped by many empires and religions, and defined by resilience through conflict and diversity.

Bosnian history is about a small but very important land where East and West meet, and where people have lived through many empires, cultures, and wars — yet kept a strong identity.

What this means in practice:

  • Influenced by Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Yugoslav rule
  • Home to a unique mix of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism
  • Site of major historical events (WWI trigger, WWII resistance, 1990s war)
  • Known for strong resistance movements, especially during WWII
  • Rich cultural heritage like Stećci
  • One-sentence summary:

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a place where different cultures meet, history is layered, and survival through difficult times is a central theme.
