Story of the Battle of Neretva (9.2. – 15.3.1943)
The Battle of the Neretva was one of the most dramatic and famous battles of World War II in the Balkans. It is also known as “Operation Case White” (by the Axis forces) and took place in early March1943 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The situation: a trapped army
The Partisan forces, 4 Divisions (unknown ~20.000, loss ~10.000 killed + surrended 2.500), led by Josip Broz Tito, were:
Surrounded by forces (~120.000, loss ~7500) :
German (514–583 killed, 1.214–1.642 wounded, 145–158 missing)
Italian (1.605 killed, 983 captured)
Ustaše (126 killed, 258 wounded, 218 missing)
Četnik (~15.000, 2.000–3.000 killed or wounded)
Carrying many wounded soldiers (~3.500) and civilians
Forced into a narrow area around the Neretva River valley
*Numbers taken from several sources– Different claims German and Yugoslav
The goal of the Axis was simple:
Destroy the Partisan resistance completely.
The “destroyed bridge” strategy
One of the most famous moments of the battle happened at the Neretva River:
The only bridge over the river was destroyed by the Partisans themselves
This created confusion among the enemy, who believed the Partisans could not cross
In reality, the Partisans secretly built a temporary wooden bridge
They used it to evacuate thousands of wounded people across the river
