Monument on Makljen – Bitka na Neretvi

The Makljen Monument is a large memorial located on a mountain pass in Bosnia and Herzegovina, near Prozor-Rama. It was built in 1978 to commemorate events from World War II, especially the Battle of the Neretva (1943).

Description of the monument

  • The monument was designed by artist Boško Kućanski.
  • It was made of white concrete and had an abstract, modern shape.
  • The structure was about 14 meters high and very massive.

Its form was unusual:

  • Some people said it looked like a fist (“Tito’s fist”) symbolizing strength.
  • Others described it as a flower opening, representing life and hope after war.

Meaning and symbolism

The monument was built to honor:

  • Partisan fighters led by Josip Broz Tito
  • Their effort to protect around 4,000 wounded soldiers during the battle

It symbolized:

  • Courage and sacrifice
  • Unity of people in former Yugoslavia
  • Survival in difficult wartime conditions

Why was the Makljen monument placed there?

The monument on Makljen Pass was built because that exact location was strategically important during the battle.

During the Battle of the Neretva:

  • Makljen was a key mountain route
  • Partisan forces had to break through enemy lines there
  • It was part of their escape path with thousands of wounded soldiers

👉 So the monument marks a real battlefield position, not just a general memory.

What happened to it?

  • The monument was damaged and later destroyed in 2000 using explosives.
  • Today, only the ruins and inner structure remain.
  • It is now a protected national monument, but it has not been fully restored.

Tourist impression today

Visitors today can see:

  • The remains of the large concrete structure
  • A powerful but abandoned and emotional atmosphere
  • Beautiful mountain landscapes around the site

Many tourists find it interesting because it looks:

  • Like a ruined futuristic sculpture
  • A reminder of both history and conflict

Simple conclusion

The Makljen monument is a symbolic and dramatic memorial. Even in ruins, it tells a strong story about war, memory, and history in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
